Italian citizenship by residence and by marriage

We check requirements and documents before submission, because an incomplete application causes delays or refusal.

By residence

Law 91/1992 (art. 9) grants citizenship to those who have legally resided in Italy for a certain number of years: ten for citizens of non-EU countries, with shorter periods in some cases. You also need adequate income in recent years, no disqualifying records and knowledge of Italian at level B1.

By marriage

The foreign spouse of an Italian citizen can apply for citizenship (art. 5 of the same law) after two years of legal residence in Italy from the marriage, or three years if the spouses live abroad. These periods are halved if the couple has children. Here too, level B1 Italian is required.

How we work

  • Preliminary check of residence, income and documents
  • Check of legalisations, apostilles and translations of foreign documents
  • Completion and submission of the application on the Ministry of the Interior portal
  • Monitoring of the case and replies to requests for additional documents

Main documents

  • Full birth certificate, legalised or apostilled and translated
  • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin and any countries of residence, legalised or apostilled and translated
  • Certificate of Italian language knowledge, level B1
  • Passport and residence permit
  • Income for the last three years
  • Receipt of the fee payment and revenue stamp

We also assess citizenship by descent cases, in light of the 2025 reform.
