Family reunification

From the clearance at the Prefettura to the visa at the embassy, up to the residence permit for family reasons in Italy.

Who can be reunited

Article 29 of the Consolidated Immigration Act allows reunification with, among others, your spouse, minor children and, under certain conditions, adult children and dependent parents.

Requirements

  • Suitable housing, certified by the municipality
  • A minimum annual income, calculated on the basis of the social allowance and the number of family members
  • A valid residence permit of the applicant, of the type required by law

Stages of the procedure

  • Clearance application to the Prefettura's Single Desk for Immigration
  • Visa issued by the Italian embassy or consulate in the family member's country
  • Entry into Italy and application for a residence permit for family reasons

We also prepare the consular forms and the declarations of hospitality or guarantee required by the embassy.

Main documents

  • Passport and residence permit of the applicant
  • Housing suitability certificate issued by the municipality
  • Rental, free-loan or ownership contract
  • Proof of income: employment contract, payslips, CU or tax return
  • Passport of the family member to be reunited
  • Birth or marriage certificates proving the family relationship, legalised and translated

If the Prefettura does not reply

The law sets a time limit for issuing the clearance. If it is exceeded, we take action with formal reminders and the applications provided for by law.
